Demolition – A Mitigation Option
Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana
Terrebonne Parish offered a voluntary demolition program to interested homeowners after the Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. To date, ten properties will be cleared of damaged structures, which also helps to eliminate blight. Dismantling the structures enables property owners to build or purchase another home in a safer, less hazardous location.

Passed in 2009, the plan incorporates various adaptation options including protection, accommodation, and managed retreat. Managed retreat or planned relocation refers to moving development and infrastructure out of harm‘s way in a planned and controlled manner over time using techniques such as long-range infrastructure planning, property abandonment, structure relocation, and hazard avoidance.
