Engineering and Design Guidelines

Louisiana Flood Protection Design Guidelines (LFPDG) Geotechnical Section Version 1.0

The LFPDG have been developed to accommodate CPRA and State of Louisiana Projects based on lessons learned and experience gained from Louisiana flood protection projects. The LFPDG will serve as the minimum design standard consistent with sound engineering practices for those engaged in designing or constructing a flood protection project with funding provided by the State. The CPRA will continue to improve and update these design guidelines as new information is discovered and as design techniques evolve.

CPRA Marsh Creation Design Guidelines

For several decades, the state of Louisiana has worked with sponsors and stakeholders to successfully design and implement marsh creation projects within the Louisiana Coastal Zone. The CPRA Engineering Division has utilized the technical expertise and best practices gained from the In-House design and construction of marsh creation projects to develop marsh creation design guidelines and standards for the implementation of marsh creation projects.

The CPRA Marsh Creation Design Guidelines, MCDG1.0, is intended to provide engineering guidance pertaining to the design and construction of marsh creation projects, and will serve as the minimum design standard consistent with sound engineering practices for those engaged in designing and constructing marsh creation projects within the Louisiana Coastal Zone. The document reflects on Louisiana’s Working Coast, discusses Marsh Creation Implementation, and provides Marsh Creation Design Criteria guidance. Included in the Appendices is guidance pertaining to Surveying Standards, Geotechnical Standards, Marsh Inundation, Construction Cost Estimating, Plans and Typical Details, Performance Measures, and FAQ’s.

CPRA Geotechnical Standards, Marsh Creation and Coastal Restoration Projects

Louisiana’s deltaic coast is primarily composed of soft, alluvial soil deposits, and offers a challenging landscape for the design engineer and requires a thorough understanding of the geotechnical soil properties to optimize design features and efficiently construct marsh creation and coastal restoration projects within the Louisiana Coastal Zone.

The CPRA Geotechnical Standards, Marsh Creation and Coastal Restoration Projects, Version 1.0, also included in Appendix B of the MCDG1.0, was developed by the CPRA Engineering Division and provides guidance pertaining to geotechnical subsurface investigations, laboratory testing, shear strength line development, consolidation settlement, and slope stability design criteria, for the implementation of marsh creation and coastal restoration projects within the Louisiana Coastal Zone.
